Russian Company “TransContainer” Opens the Subsidiary Office in Latvia

On 20 June 2007 Russian company “TransContainer”, which is a subsidiary of SJC “Russian Railways”, opens the subsidiary office in Latvia. It is the first official subsidiary office in the Baltic States. In the course of time the company plans to open Customer Service Centre in order to provide all kinds of services in the area of container transport.
In accordance with the legislative provisions in Latvia a subsidiary office of a foreign company is not allowed to do economic activities. Therefore, the company will start its activities with a detailed market research on container transport. The company “TransContainer” will determine the most effective model of the rendering of services corresponding to the results of the research and analysis. The subsidiary office will be doing regular marketing activities in order to attract cargo shipment to the railway routes in Russia and Latvia. Besides, the subsidiary office will search for the opportunities and encourage the opening of the container transport routes regularly.
In 2006 cargo shipment in heavy tonnage containers by rail between Russia and Latvia increased about 43% comparing to the year 2005, and was 6.6 thousand TEU. Moreover, transit traffic increased about 64% and was 1.2 thousand TEU.
In first five months of the year 2007 transit traffic increased about 59% in comparison with the same time period in 2006; and it was 449 TEU.

Russia’s national container operator SJC “TransContainer” is a subsidiary company of SJC “Russian Railways”. The company “TransContainer” was set up in October of 2003 as a subsidiary office of the newly established company “Russian Railways”. In March of 2006 there was a legal registration of the open corporation “TransContainer”; as a result it was reorganized. As from 1 July 2006 the company started its own unaffiliated economic activities.
Currently in “TransContainer” work more than 4500 people, but 17 subsidiary offices in different Russia’s regions cover the entire Russian railway system. The company made a profit of more than 167.1 million euros in 2006 from July till December; net profit exceeded 41.3 million euros.
For the time being SJC “TransContainer” continues to deal with the problems in order to optimize Russia’s container transport logistics on the basis of the subsidiary offices in all 17 Russian railways and 47 terminals in all the handling centres in Russia.
The priority for the company “TransContainer” is the development of international agency network in order to collaborate effectively with the European and Asian railways, as well as with the forwarding companies. Currently the company has the subsidiary offices in Germany, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The agents of the company work in China and South Korea. The company has established the joint company “ContainerTransScandinavia” in Finland.
“TransContainer” possesses almost 24 thousand container transport platforms and 48 thousand containers.
