LDz dismantles railway tracks in the closed lines

Wednesday, 23 September, 2009

Till the end of the year SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš plans to finish dismantling of railway tracks of the lines, which have already been closed several years ago.

Railway tracks will be dismantled in the spans Liepāja – Ventspils, Saurieši – Ērgļi, Ieriķi – Gulbene and Gulbene – State border.

It will not be possible to reopen traffic in these lines due to bad condition of railway tracks – rotten sleepers, many defects in rails, inadequacy of the necessary load requirements. As well in many closed lines there have been stolen rails, rail fastenings and other rail track materials. Therefore, LDz decided to dismantle rail tracks and sell the rails.

Dismantling of railway tracks will be done by LDz Infrastruktūra Ltd, subsidiary of SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš.

Railway lines can be reopened to train traffic if the state makes an order to ensure passenger transportation in a particular line.

Concern Latvijas dzelzce ļš comprises the holding company SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš and four subsidiaries – LDz Cargo Ltd., which is a rail freight operator; LDz infrastruktūra Ltd., which provides infrastructure construction and maintenance works; LDz ritošā sastāva serviss Ltd., which provides rolling stock repairs and maintenance works, and LDz Apsardze – a security company.
