Monday, 8 June, 2009

In the first five months of this year LDz Cargo Ltd., a subsidiary of SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš has carried 23.38 million tons of cargo, which is 0.4% more than in the respective period last year.

In the same period last year there were transported 23.29 million tons of cargo.

Freight volumes grew due to increase in import transportations. They have increased by 5.6% compared to the same period of 2008.

“During the previous months there was low price level of energy resources in world markets and demand for raw materials was unstable, therefore, it is gratifying that LDz Cargo could increase volumes of these products. It indicates that transit infrastructure in Latvia and service quality of our company corresponds to market demands,” the results commented Guntis Mačs, Chairman of the Board of LDz Cargo.

There was a slight fall in export transportations, ie. 951 thousand tons, which is 1% less than in five months of 2008.

Most of all there were transported oil products – the volumes have increased by 9.9%, ie. 9.5 million tons compared to five months of 2008.

This year there were transported 8.6 million tons of coal and coke. The volumes of these cargos grew by 17.1%. The volumes of chemical cargos this year increased by 21.2%, ie. there were transported 1.2 million tons.

There was a fall in volumes of mineral fertilizers and metals - the volumes of mineral fertilizers have decreased by 39.2%, ie. there were transported 1.2 million tons. In five months of this year there were transported 603 thousand tons of metals.

“The development of cargo transportations will depend on rise in price level of energy resources and economic recovery of several world regions,” pointed G.Mačs.

LDz Cargo Ltd. is the biggest rail freight carrier in the Baltic States and one of four subsidiaries of Latvijas dzelzceļš.
