Friday, 17 April, 2009

On 17 April 2009 Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz) organized cleaning works in the territory along railway lines in Riga, which were organized within the framework of Spring Clean Month. More than 250 railway workers participated in these works.

“In Latvijas dzelzceļš we organize annually Spring Clean Month in the biggest railway junctions in Latvia – Riga, Liepāja, Ventspils, Rēzekne, Daugavpils and Jelgava, where garbage is cleaned up after the winter in railway territories and their surroundings. This year we started cleaning works on 1 April and will finish them until 30 May. Today together with Pasažieru vilciens we organized special cleaning works in railway territories in Riga and we collected several hundred plastic bags with rubbish,” said Uģis Magonis, Chairman of the Board of SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš.

“In summer LDz will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the foundation of national railway company; therefore, this year we work more willingly and diligently. In the cleaning works participated both the directors, and the staff. We would like to celebrate the anniversary of our company in clean environment, and each railway worker would feel satisfaction for the work that has been done,” said Regīna Svirska, Communication Director of SJSC Latvijas dzelzceļš.

In this event LDz renewed 80 years old tradition, which began during the construction of railway line Liepāja-Glūda by cleaning railway territories, doing greening works and planting trees. LDz Chairman of the Board together with Members of the Board and the directors at LDz office building planted a pendulous elm.

“Nowadays rail transport is one of the most environmentally friendly transport modes. By renewing this tradition – planting the trees – we want not only make our environment greener, but also we would like to remind that we are responsible for our surroundings and our land. Therefore, we will continue this tradition in the following years, “ said U.Magonis.

Latvijas dzelzceļš supported the Great cleaning works, which took place on 18 April in Latvia. In cooperation with several local municipalities LDz ensured transportation of the rubbish from railway territories to the waste dump.
